What this policy is
DKV Renta Baja Laboral Clásico pays money for every day a person has spent on sick leave. Illness or accident makes no difference, and neither does whether it happened at work or in private life. The policy matters wherever the state benefit fails to cover real costs. An employee has only part of their salary replaced by social security. For a self-employed person it is harsher still: contributions are based on actual earnings, but sick pay is calculated on a base that is almost always lower than what they really make. How the benefit is worked out
The arrangement is simple: you choose a daily amount and it is multiplied by the number of days of leave. The money arrives in a single payment once the leave closes, on presentation of the return-to-work certificate. If the absence drags on, there is no need to wait for the end: from day 40 an advance can be requested. The excess is the number of days at the start of the leave that are not paid. You can choose 3, 7, 10, 15 or 30 days. The longer it is, the cheaper the policy. The idea is not to pay for three-day colds and to cover what genuinely hurts. The birth benefit at twenty times the rate
This is a cover that takes one line in the product sheet and counts for a great deal in practice: on birth or adoption, twenty times the daily benefit is paid at once. It is not tied to sick leave and does not require one to be opened. For a family expecting a child, this payment often covers several years of premiums. The waiting period matters here: pregnancy and birth are covered after 8 months. Taking the policy out once a pregnancy has begun is too late. What can be added
Daily hospitalisation benefit. A separate amount for each day as an inpatient, on top of the sick-leave payment. Capital for surgery. A one-off payment if an operation was needed. Capital for absolute and permanent disability. Triggered when social security recognises the disability. Available only up to age 54 and running to 65. Medical assistance following an accident. Here DKV is the only company in Spain offering this cover with no limit inside its own network of clinics. What happens when a waiting list drags the leave out
The situation is familiar to anyone treated in the public system: the patient waits for an MRI or a specialist appointment, and the sick leave keeps running. Under this policy, DKV covers the cost of the test and provides a clinic where it can be done. The insurer's logic is easy to follow — paying for one scan is cheaper than paying daily benefits through weeks of waiting. It suits the client exactly as well.Who it fits
Self-employed people and the liberal professions — those for whom sick leave does not merely stop income: the costs of the business carry on, rent, contributions, subscriptions. Employees who want to cover the gap between their salary and what social security pays. The policy sits well alongside three others: health insurance, which treats, whereas Renta pays in cash; Accidentes, if what you need is compensation for the consequences of an injury; and Vida, if someone depends on your income. What to know before taking it out
It can be taken out between 16 and 64 and covers until 70. The disability cover is written up to 54 and runs to 65. Waiting periods: illness, hospitalisation and surgery, 2 months; disability, 3 months; pregnancy and birth, 8 months. Accidents and group S illnesses are covered from day one, with no wait. The price depends on the occupational risk group. There are four, and the difference between them is substantial: a programmer with no company car and a professional driver pay differently even with the same daily benefit.Situations this policy solves
Finance
Business Interruption and Loss of Income Insurance
The policy’s main job: to close the gap between what a person actually earns and what the state pays during sick leave.
Life
Disability and Loss of Earnings Insurance
Capital for absolute and permanent disability is added by choice. Available only up to age 54, and it runs to 65.
Traumatology
Insurance Coverage for Spinal Diagnostics and Herniated Disc Treatment in Spain
A back injury is the classic long absence. Here every day is paid, and from day 40 an advance can be requested without waiting for the return to work.
Neurology
Stroke Insurance: Emergency Hospitalization and Intensive Care
After a stroke, sick leave is measured in months. This version pays what actually happened: however long the incapacity lasted, that is what is paid.
Cardiology
Insurance Coverage for Emergency Cardiac Surgery and Heart Attack Care
A heart attack means a long recovery. The policy compensates every day rather than a fixed sum.
Motherhood
Insurance Coverage for Childbirth in Private Clinics in Spain
Birth or adoption pays 20 times the daily benefit at once. The pregnancy waiting period is 8 months — taking the policy out afterwards achieves nothing.
Traumatology
Sports Injury Insurance: Protection for Active Lifestyles
An injury in your own time is covered exactly like one at work: the policy does not ask where the accident happened.
Traumatology
Insurance coverage for ligament surgery and arthroscopy
Capital for surgery is a separate cover, paid on top of the benefit for the days of leave.
Agent's opinion
I explain this policy with a single question: how many months can you last if you cannot work from tomorrow?
An employee usually answers, "well, the state will pay something." A self-employed person often has no answer at all. That is where the real conversation starts, because the self-employed are the least protected group in Spain. They contribute on what they earn, but sick pay is calculated on a base that is almost always below their real income. Nobody makes up the difference. And the rent on the premises and the monthly contribution carry on whether they are ill or not.
About the excess I speak plainly: don't take three days simply because it "feels safer". A short excess makes the policy noticeably dearer, and a person will survive a cold without the insurer. The point of this product is to cover a month, two months, half a year — not three days of sniffles. I usually suggest pricing two options side by side, seven days and fifteen, and looking at the difference.
Almost nobody knows about the birth benefit, and it is twenty times the daily rate. I mention it to young families outright, because on its own it often pays for several years of the policy. But I say in the same breath: the waiting period is eight months, and taking the policy out once the test is positive achieves nothing.
And here is what I like most about this product. If the leave drags on because the patient is waiting for a scan, DKV pays for that scan and finds the clinic. The insurer has no interest in paying daily benefits through weeks of waiting — and it is one of those rare cases where the insurer's interest and the client's coincide completely.
