When the treatment you need is not available in Spain

Spanish healthcare is strong, but the newest techniques do not appear everywhere at once. With a serious diagnosis it sometimes turns out that the technology you need exists only abroad — and it costs so much that few people could meet it without insurance.

DKV Mundicare covers exactly that: treatment of serious illness abroad, up to €1,000,000 per person a year and up to €2,000,000 over the whole life of the policy.

Which illnesses

Cardiovascular — bypass surgery, valve replacement. Oncological. Neurosurgery. Transplants of vital organs from a living donor. And separately the neurodegenerative ones: ALS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, capped at €30,000 per person a year.

Which centres

Those regarded as world references for the illness in question: Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Duke University Hospital and Mount Sinai in New York.

The choice is not made at random. The case is reviewed by international specialists in that condition, and it is they who say which technique applies and where it is performed.

How it works in practice

You contact DKV as soon as you receive the diagnosis. DKV doctors review the documents; if the condition is covered, the case goes to the medical committee. A second opinion from international specialists is then activated, and they determine the treatment and the centre. DKV arranges the travel and the appointments.

One detail matters a great deal: DKV pays the centre directly. You do not have to find the money and then wait for reimbursement — that step simply does not exist.

Travel and accommodation for the insured person and a companion are covered up to €25,000. For each day in hospital abroad the policy pays €100. On your return, medication in Spain is reimbursed for a further 30 days as a continuation of the treatment started abroad, up to €50,000 over the life of the policy. In the event of death abroad, repatriation is covered up to €10,000.

Limitations — worth reading first

It can be taken out up to age 67. Cover ends at 75, or earlier if the overall €2,000,000 limit is used up.

Pre-existing conditions are not covered. And there is a six-month exclusion period from the start of the policy. In other words, this is insurance against what might happen, not a way to solve a problem that already exists. It makes sense to take it out early — precisely when it feels unnecessary.

Who it suits

Families with children. Companies that offer it to staff as part of their package. And people who have seen something like this close up and know what it involves.

Age changes the conversation. Before 45 it is bought just in case. From 45 onwards, because the incidence rises noticeably and it stops being an abstraction.

Mundicare works well as a second policy alongside what you already have: it does not replace health cover, it fills what health cover does not reach.

Typical situations this policy solves

Oncology
Oncology Diagnostic Insurance: PET-CT and Genetic Testing Without Waitlists
If the technique you need is not available in Spain, Mundicare opens access to international centres. Which tests are needed and where they are done is decided by world-leading specialists in that illness.
Oncology
Insurance Coverage for Oncology Surgery and Procedures
Cancer surgery is covered abroad, up to €1,000,000 per person a year. DKV pays the centre directly — you do not advance the cost.
Journeys
Medical Expense Insurance Coverage for International Travel
An important distinction: Mundicare is not travel insurance. It covers planned treatment abroad for a serious diagnosis, not an emergency while travelling.
Agent's opinion

I do not offer Mundicare as a main policy, but as a second one alongside what the client already has. It costs little and covers something people rarely think about: that the treatment they need may not be in Spain.

The first thing I always explain: pre-existing conditions are not covered, and the policy does not operate for the first six months. This is insurance for the future. Once the diagnosis is there, it is too late to take it out — and I say so plainly, because otherwise the client pays for nothing.

You understand its value when it comes to the point: DKV pays the centre itself. Not «raise the money and we will refund you», but simply pays. In that situation, that changes everything.
