What this policy is

DKV Renta Familiar pays cash on two events: hospitalisation and surgery. It does not pay for treatment — health insurance is there for that — it compensates what happens around the illness. The main difference from the rest of the Renta range: here it does not matter whether the person works. Everyone in the household living at the same address is insured, children included.

Why this is about family rather than income

When it is a child or a non-working family member who goes into hospital, that person loses no income — there is none to lose. The costs, however, appear immediately, and usually in somebody else's pocket. Someone takes unpaid leave to be there. Daily trips to the clinic appear, along with parking and meals out. A childminder for the other children. Help with the jobs the patient used to do. That is exactly what Renta Familiar's payments cover. Policies tied to lost earnings do not respond in this situation at all — and the costs are real.

Four options

When taking out the policy you choose an amount that sets both the daily hospitalisation payment and the capital for surgery. Option D — €45 a day and €900 for an operation. The only one available for a single person, though priced as though there were two. Option A — €90 a day and €1,800. Option B — €120 a day and €2,400. Option C — €150 a day and €3,000. The surgical capital is the figure at one hundred per cent. What is actually paid depends on the type of operation: the percentages by type are set out in the general conditions.

Two limits worth knowing in advance

Hospital stays shorter than 24 hours are not paid. Day surgery and procedures with same-day discharge fall outside the cover. Minimum two people. A single-person policy is possible only under option D, and the premium is calculated as though two people were insured.

Waiting periods

Hospitalisation and surgery, 2 months. Pregnancy, miscarriage, birth and postpartum, 8 months. And an important exception: if the event results from an accident, no waiting periods apply at all. A child who breaks an arm in the second week of cover is still paid.

What else is included

Telephone medical advice and a second medical opinion for serious illness. Access to reduced prices through DKV Club Salud y Bienestar.

What to know before taking it out

It can be taken out up to 64 and covers until 65. That is noticeably shorter than the employment-linked Renta products, which run to 70: Renta Familiar is designed for a family of working age, not for elderly parents. Payment is made on presentation of the hospital discharge or the report on the operation performed.

What it goes with

The policy sits well alongside health insurance — Profesional, Integral, Personal Doctor or Mundisalud: that pays for treatment, while Renta Familiar provides money for everything else. Among the other products, the usual companions are Dental, Mundicare® for protection abroad and Hogar for the home itself.

Situations this policy solves

Pediatrics
Child Medical Insurance: Access to Specialists Without Waiting
Everyone in the household at the same address is insured, children included. Whether the person works makes no difference.
Motherhood
Newborn Health Insurance: Neonatology and Special Care
A child’s hospital stay takes away no income, but it creates costs: unpaid leave, daily journeys, a childminder for the others.
Motherhood
Insurance Coverage for Childbirth in Private Clinics in Spain
Pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period are covered 8 months after the policy is taken out.
Oncology
Insurance Coverage for Oncology Surgery and Procedures
The surgical capital is paid as a percentage of the option chosen: from €900 on option D to €3,000 on option C.
Surgery
How to get Da Vinci robotic surgery covered by private insurance in Spain?
The percentage paid depends on the type of operation and is set out in the general conditions; it is not chosen when taking out the policy.
Traumatology
Insurance coverage for ligament surgery and arthroscopy
In the case of an accident no waiting periods apply at all: the benefit is paid from the first days of cover.
Neurology
Stroke Insurance: Emergency Hospitalization and Intensive Care
Hospitalisation is paid for every day, but only if the stay lasted more than 24 hours. Day surgery does not count.
Traumatology
Insurance Coverage for Spinal Diagnostics and Herniated Disc Treatment in Spain
The policy covers a minimum of two people. For one person only option D exists, and even then at the price of two.
Agent's opinion
This is the hardest policy to explain and the one that sells least often. Not because it is a poor product, but because people are used to thinking that insurance is for whoever earns the money. Renta Familiar is precisely the opposite — it is about those who do not. I usually explain it with an example I see constantly. A child goes into hospital for a week. No income has been lost — there was none. But the mother takes unpaid leave, the father drives across town to the clinic every day, someone has to look after the younger one, and that goes on for a week. Nobody adds it up, and a thousand euros leaves the household. On option C, seven days in hospital comes to €1,050. Exactly that hole. I mention people who have moved country separately, and they are most of my clients. Someone who has recently arrived has no grandmother here to collect the children and no sister to bring food to the hospital. Everything is bought. Which is why families in emigration need this policy more than locals do, even though they are the last to think of it. Two limits I state before signing, not after. Stays under a day are not paid — day surgery and same-day discharge do not count. And the minimum of two insured: for one person only option D exists, and even then at the price of two. And here is what I genuinely like about it: in the case of an accident, no waiting periods apply at all. A child who breaks an arm two weeks after the policy starts is still paid. Terms like that are not common in insurance, and they are worth knowing about.
