The list of guarantees comes from the Zurich Accidentes Colectivos general conditions and the product brochure. The price example is from a client policy in force. The agreement articles are checked against the official publications, BOE and BOP, referenced in the table. Specific amounts and the set of guarantees are fixed in the particular conditions of your policy.

What this policy is

Accident insurance is taken out by a company for a group of people at once. Usually its
own staff, but not only: pupils of a school or academy, members of a club, participants in
a race or a competition can all be insured. The policy is unnamed — everyone within the
described group is covered.

This is not the same as life insurance. It pays when an accident was the cause.
Death from ordinary illness is not part of the basic cover — that needs a life policy. The
difference is fundamental, and it is exactly where the wrong choice is usually made.

Two products, and the collective agreement decides which

Zurich Accidentes Convenios, for when the sector agreement obliges the company to
insure its staff. Cover and sums are taken exactly as the agreement sets them. And
something particularly valuable: Zurich itself periodically reviews the agreement in force
for your company and updates the cover. Agreements get revised and the amounts rise; you
will not have to track it.

Zurich Accidentes Colectivos, for when the agreement requires nothing, or less
than you need. You choose the sums and the guarantees are assembled to fit.

Occupational cover or twenty-four hours

The policy can be limited to working activity — covering accidents connected with
the job — or extended to 24 hours, including travel, holidays and weekends. The first
is cheaper; the second covers the whole of a person’s life.

The territory in both cases is worldwide, within the activities named in the
policy.

What it comes to in money

A real example from our own book, without the company name. Premises in Tenerife, nine
employees, activity: bar staff, occupational cover. Death by accident, permanent incapacity
and total incapacity for their own trade are each insured for €50,000.

The cost: €46.55 per person per year. The whole policy for nine people, about
€454 including taxes.

What it does not cover

The list is specific and worth knowing in advance.

  • Anything intentional — caused by the insured or with their connivance. And
notoriously dangerous or criminal acts, except in self-defence or rescue.
  • Alcohol and drugs — anything happening under the influence of drink or of
    substances not medically prescribed.
  • Sports: rugby, rafting, hydrospeed and the like; speed or endurance trials with
motor vehicles, training included; bobsleigh; fencing; competitive skiing and professionally
practised sport. Separately, martial arts, wrestling and boxing. And air sports generally:
    parachuting, ballooning, hang-gliding, microlights, gliders.
  • Illnesses of any kind, and injuries from operations or medical treatment not
caused by an accident. Hernias not resulting from sudden strain. Sunstroke and frostbite.
  • War, invasion, actions of armed forces or security bodies in peacetime; riots, civil
commotion, revolutions and terrorism; nuclear reaction or radiation; and extraordinary
natural events, unless they occur outside Spain.
  • Skiing, for people insured under policies of less than a year.

Write to us and we will look yours up

Tell us your company’s province and line of business: we will find your agreement, read the relevant article and tell you whether a policy is compulsory, which one exactly, for what amount, and which employees it must cover. It is free and commits you to nothing.

One caveat we think it fair to state: agreements are revised and the amounts change. That is why we check the wording in force in the official gazette on the day you ask, rather than the internet repositories, where outdated texts tend to linger.

Typical tasks that this policy solves

Staff
Group Accident Insurance for Employees
A payment to the employee or their family in the event of an accident, at work or in private life, depending on how the policy is set up.
Staff
Mandatory Employee Life Insurance according to Collective Agreement (Convenio)
Many collective agreements in Spain require the employer to insure employees’ lives. The policy meets that obligation and removes the risk of claims.
Life
Disability and Loss of Earnings Insurance
Permanent disability removes income for years ahead. This cover pays a capital sum when the ability to work is lost for good.
Responsibility
Employer’s Liability Insurance: RC Patronal Protection in Spain
If an employee is injured at work and brings a claim against the employer, this cover pays the compensation and the court defence.
Life
How to secure your family's financial future if the main income disappears
The policy’s main benefit: a capital sum for the family if the insured dies. The money goes straight to the named beneficiaries, outside the inheritance process.
Agent's opinion Agent's opinion

The main mistake in choosing this policy is believing it replaces life cover. It does not. If the collective agreement requires cover for death from any cause and the company produces an accident policy, the obligation is not met — and that comes to light at the worst possible moment.

The second thing worth thinking about: occupational cover or twenty-four hours. The price difference is small; the difference in meaning is not. Most accidents that happen to people do not happen at work.

And the third, from practice: forty-six euros a year per person for fifty thousand of cover is a figure companies tend to misjudge in both directions. Some think it expensive and never ask. Others assume that if it is cheap the cover must be token. Neither is true.
