What this policy is

DKV Renta Hospitalización pays a fixed amount for every day spent in hospital. Everything else — work, income, occupation — is irrelevant. It is the simplest product in the whole Renta range and the only one whose price is not calculated but simply chosen from two options.

Two lines, and that is the entire tariff

€44 a year — €40 for every day in hospital. €66 a year — €60 for every day in hospital. No risk groups, no age bands, no loadings for occupation. Payment is annual only; there are no instalments. The arithmetic is straightforward: two nights in hospital on the second premium return almost double the annual cost.

Who it actually exists for

The rest of the Renta range is tied to employment — it replaces lost earnings. This one is tied to nothing, and in its product sheet DKV lists exactly the people who are usually offered nothing: students, the unemployed, unpaid carers, the early-retired, parents who have temporarily stopped working to look after children, people working on projects of their own. The logic is the same as in Renta Familiar: hospitalisation creates costs regardless of whether there was any income. Someone travels to the clinic every day, someone takes unpaid leave to be nearby, and some things simply have to be bought or paid for. It suits working people too, as a cheap addition to a main health policy or to an employment-linked Renta.

The birth payment

A separate cover: on hospitalisation for birth, the postpartum period or adoption, a single payment equal to three days of benefit is made. If a condition arises from the same process, the payment extends to seven days. The pregnancy waiting period is 8 months, the standard across the Renta range. Taking the policy out once a pregnancy is under way serves no purpose.

The limits, and they are few

The stay must exceed 24 hours. Day surgery and same-day discharge are not paid. This is the same rule as in Renta Familiar. Maximum 365 days per claim. The count starts from the first day of the stay, not from some later one: there is no excess here, unlike the employment-linked Renta products. Payment arrives in one sum on presentation of the hospital discharge.

What else is included

Telephone medical advice and a second medical opinion for serious illness. Access to reduced prices through DKV Club Salud y Bienestar and the Quiero cuidarme Más app.

What to know before taking it out

It can be taken out between 16 and 64 and covers until 70. Waiting periods: hospitalisation through illness, 2 months; pregnancy and birth, 8 months.

What it goes with

It is most often taken alongside health insurance: that pays for the treatment, while this policy provides money for the costs around it. The second common combination is with an employment-linked Renta: Clásico or Baremado cover the loss of income, and Hospitalización adds a payment for the days spent as an inpatient. The third is Mundicare®, for protection against serious illness abroad.

Agent's opinion
This is the only policy in my practice that I offer without asking about occupation or income. There is nothing to calculate: €66 a year, and €60 for every day in hospital. Two nights, and the policy has paid for itself almost twice over. I remember it in two situations. The first is when someone says insurance is beyond their means. Arguing is pointless, but five and a half euros a month is not a sum people argue about. It does not replace health insurance and I say so plainly, but it does not leave the person with nothing either. The second is when a client is taking out health insurance and we are discussing what to add. There I suggest it almost every time: next to the main premium it is pennies, and it covers the very part of the costs that health insurance never does — the trips to the clinic, the unpaid leave of whoever is there, the everyday spending around a hospital stay. And separately, for the people who are rarely offered anything at all: students, the unemployed, those caring for a relative, the early-retired. They are usually told that insuring income is not for them because they have no income. But the costs of a hospital stay arise for everyone alike, and this is the only policy in the range that acknowledges it. What I say before signing: the stay has to be longer than a day, day surgery does not count. And payment is annual only, with no instalments — though at this amount that rarely stops anyone.
