An electric car breaks down differently
An ordinary motor policy is designed for a combustion vehicle. An electric one has different weak points: the battery, the charging cable, dependence on charging points, and the fact that running out of electricity mid-journey is not a breakdown but a fairly normal situation.
Zurich Motor GO! in its electric version adds to the usual cover the guarantees that address exactly those cases.
What is here and is not in an ordinary policy
Towing to a charging point, with no distance limit. In the ordinary modalities the tow truck covers up to 200 kilometres. Here, if the battery goes flat, you are taken to the nearest charging point whatever the distance.
The battery. Repair or replacement in case of fire, theft and own damage. It is the most expensive component in the car, and ordinary policies do not single it out.
The charging cable. Compensation if it is stolen or damaged. Cables get left in the car or at the charging point, and they go missing more often than you would think.
Damage to someone else’s charging station. If you damage the station while charging, civil liability covers it. The equipment is expensive and the situation is not that rare.
A replacement vehicle, also electric. Or compensation of €30 plus VAT a day, up to 15 days, if you would rather not take a replacement car.
A garage network for electric vehicles. Dedicated and specialised: not every workshop will take on high-voltage systems.
Assistance that combustion policies do not have. Help using an unfamiliar charging point. Remote configuration of on-board devices. Advice on a dashboard error: what it means and whether you can drive on.
The three levels of roadside assistance
The level is chosen separately, and the difference between them is considerable.
Esencial — the base: assistance from kilometre zero, punctures, towing to a charging point, wrong fuel, transport of pets, of children under 14 and of people with reduced mobility, delivery of spare keys. Abroad: advance of judicial bail and legal defence costs.
Ampliada — adds help with charging points, device configuration, advice on dashboard errors and double the standard guarantee amounts.
Plus — adds an eco replacement car or a cash payment for the days without a vehicle.
What works just as in an ordinary policy
Civil liability, legal defence, driver accident cover, glass, theft, fire, weather and animals, own damage — all of it follows the same rules and the same four modalities: A terceros, Lunas, Ampliado and Todo Riesgo.
The electric part is an addition on top of the chosen modality, not a replacement for it. First you choose the level of cover, then you add the electric guarantees.
What to flag in advance
The territorial scope and the exclusions are the same as for the other modalities: legal protection is limited to events in Spain, and driving under the influence or without a licence removes cover entirely.
And separately: cover is available from age 25. For younger drivers other options must be looked at, and we check that before quoting, not after.
Typical tasks that this policy solves
Agent's opinion With electric cars clients nearly always ask the same thing: what happens if the battery dies far from a charging point. In an ordinary policy that runs into the 200-kilometre towing limit. Here there is no limit — you are taken to the nearest charger, however far it is.
The second thing nobody thinks about in advance is the cable. It gets left in the boot or at the charging point, and it disappears. It costs a fair amount, and here it is covered as a separate line.
And I always give the same reminder: the electric part sits on top of an ordinary modality, it does not replace it. First we decide whether own damage and theft are needed, and only then add the electric cover. Otherwise the client believes they are fully insured when in fact they have A terceros with a battery.
