The figures come from the general conditions of DKV Profesional. The cover, limits and co-payments that apply to you are set out in the particular conditions of your policy.
What this policy is
DKV Profesional is not built as a finished insurance product but as a set of building blocks. The medical part is divided into three modules, and you take only the ones you need: one, two or all three. Those three modules produce seven possible combinations, from the simplest protection to full cover.
The fewer modules you take, the lower the premium. The doctors and clinics stay the same: you get the general DKV network, not a cut-down list.
The second feature is that a single policy and a single bill can hold more than health cover — a daily benefit for time off work, accident cover and funeral cover. Hence the name: the product was designed for the self-employed, who find one line of expenditure easier to manage than four.
The three health modules
Module A — primary care. General practice and paediatrics in the surgery, at home and by video, nursing, basic blood and urine tests, abdominal ultrasound, plain X-ray, one basic annual cardiological check, ambulances and emergency care without admission. Travel assistance abroad is included here too.
Module B — specialists and outpatient treatment. All medical and surgical specialities, high-technology diagnostics — CT, magnetic resonance imaging, digestive endoscopy, capsule endoscopy. Physiotherapy, rehabilitation and podiatry with no limit on the number of sessions. Psychotherapy, speech therapy, nutritionist, prevention programmes, sleep unit and pain unit.
Module C — hospitalisation and surgery. Surgery across all specialities, hospital stay with no day limit except psychiatric care, capped at 60 days a year. Prostheses, oncological treatment, dialysis and transplants. Single room with a bed for a companion.
The modules are not sealed off from one another: some benefits open up only in combination. The general annual check-up in a single appointment requires modules A and B together. Reimbursement for umbilical cord stem cell storage requires all three.
Included with any combination of modules
Travel assistance abroad. Trips of up to 180 days, with a limit of €30,000 per claim and per insured person.
Basic dental care at no extra cost. Consultations, extractions, oral treatments, fluoride applications, unlimited cleanings and the dental X-rays associated with them. Fissure sealants and fillings up to the age of 14 are included only with module B. Other dental treatment is provided at reduced fixed prices that you pay yourself.
Second medical opinion for serious illness. You or your doctor obtain remote advice from internationally recognised specialists, who study the medical history and give their view on the diagnosis and treatment options.
Medical helplines. DKV doctor around the clock, paediatric line, psycho-emotional line, pregnancy line, childhood obesity, nutrition, tropical and sports lines. Video consultations.
What can be added to the same policy
Renta — benefit for temporary incapacity. A daily payment for the duration of sick leave caused by illness or accident, whether it happens at work or in private life. You choose the daily amount. Available in a classic or a scheduled version.
Accidentes — accident cover. A payment in the event of death or permanent disability.
Decesos — funeral cover. A capital sum for funeral expenses: you can take the payment or use the providers DKV has agreements with.
These three covers end at the close of the policy year in which the insured person turns 70. For funeral cover, protection continues through a separate individual policy.
How it differs from DKV Modular
DKV has a second policy with exactly the same medical part: DKV Modular. The same modules A, B and C, the same waiting periods, the same €30,000 of travel assistance and the same lifelong cover from the third year.
The difference lies in the add-ons. In Profesional they are full, standalone policies: Renta, a daily benefit for any period of sick leave in an amount you choose, accident cover and funeral cover. Plus a 5% lifelong discount for the self-employed.
In Modular their place is taken by small add-ons, and for the policyholder only: a capital sum of up to €30,000 on death or disability, a capital sum for funeral expenses, and an income for 36 months — but solely after a road traffic accident.
The rule is simple: if you work for yourself and need to cover the loss of income during illness, Profesional is your policy. If you only need medical care, look at Modular — it will cost less.
New in 2026
Lymphatic drainage after cancer treatment — up to 20 sessions per insured person per year, module B.
Psychological support in neurodevelopmental disorders, for treating symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The number of sessions depends on the insured person's age, module B.
Waiting periods
All benefits are available from the first day of cover except those listed below. Emergency care never carries a waiting period.
Six months: outpatient surgery in groups 0, I and II; CT and magnetic resonance imaging; musculoskeletal lithotripsy; interventional diagnostics without admission; psychotherapy sessions; podiatric surgery and biomechanical gait analysis.
Eight months: surgery in groups III to VIII, hospitalisation and surgical prostheses; assistance at any type of birth other than premature, and caesarean section; proton therapy for paediatric tumours.
Twelve months: transplants; medical care for HIV and AIDS.
Conditions of application
The health module can be taken out up to the age of 75, the other modules up to 67. From the third year the policy becomes lifelong.
The price depends on the modules chosen, age and place of residence. Self-employed clients receive a 5% lifelong discount. Discount by number of insured: 7% for four, 12% for five or more. Discount by payment frequency: 7% annual, 4.6% half-yearly, 2.8% quarterly.
Typical tasks that this policy solves
I suggest Profesional when price matters but the client does not want to end up with a weak policy. Here you can genuinely reduce the premium without losing the doctors: the network is the same one used by DKV's expensive policies. What shrinks is the scope, not the quality.
Most often these are self-employed people and young families. The self-employed value having health cover and a sick-leave benefit on the same bill — for someone working for themselves, time off work is a direct loss of income and has to be covered separately. Families usually start with two modules and add the third when the need arises.
What I always warn about. Module A without module B is general practice and paediatrics only, with no specialists. People often think they have bought health insurance and then find they cannot see a cardiologist. If the aim is to avoid the waiting lists for specialists, module B is essential.
And the second point: assembling a policy from parts makes sense when you know what you will actually use. If it is clear from the outset that you need everything, do the sums on DKV's ordinary health policies as well — with all three modules the difference can be small, and other products are broader in places. I always calculate both options and show the figures side by side.
